Terry Cusick -Ten Tips For Creating Better Photos:
NPR.org, July 13, 2009 · The everyday portrait doesn't have to be boring, and the everyday photographer doesn't have to seem amateur.
Find a focal point: Focus on the subject of your picture — a person, a group of people, etc., and make your photo all about that.
Don't be afraid to get close: It's OK to invade personal space.
Move your feet, knees, whatever: Get low, get high, bend your knees.
Clean up your background: Watch for poles or other things coming out of the back of people's heads. But also look for plain or solid-colored designs to put your subject against.
Use natural light: Morning and evening light is always best. Find window light for portraits rather than using your flash.
Compose your pictures: Use leading lines, which means one or more lines to direct a viewer's eye to your subject. Also, incorporate the rule of thirds — move your subject out of the middle into the left or right third of the frame.
Watch your subjects: Look for "key" moments, rather than posing. Make them laugh. Avoid posing where subjects look unnatural.
Go off-center: Symmetry is not always your friend.
Change your vantage point: Take some photos from the front, some from down low…you get the point.
Don't cut off joints: Neck, wrists, feet — they should stay whole.
